In a landmark event, kakalistiq.com reports that the duo of Mrs Victoria Peregrini, Chairman, of Lagos State Teaching Service Commission and Mrs Iyabo Seriki-Bello, Permanent Secretary of the Commission has inspired newly inducted teachers in the state over the significance of student-centred skills necessary for the advancement of post-primary education.
They spoke during the week when the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), in collaboration with Nurture House Consulting, inducted 1000 newly recruited teachers into the state’s Post Primary Schools.
The induction program, held simultaneously at Bolade in Oshodi, Owutu in Ikorodu, and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Ikeja, was graced by the presence of TESCOM Chairman, Members of the Commission, Permanent Secretary, and Directors.
Declaring the induction programme open, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, Chairman of TESCOM, congratulated the inductees on their appointments. She highlighted the theme of the programme, “Empowering Educators for Outstanding Learner Performance,” emphasizing its significance.
“The induction is to provide you the opportunity to be integrated and equipped with requisite skills that will not only take you through your new career paths but will, more importantly, turn you into resourceful individuals who will, in the years ahead, contribute meaningfully to the progress of education in the State,” Peregrino stated.
Mrs. Peregrino further reminded the new teachers of their vital role as nurturers, creators, and destiny builders. “You are catalysts in determining the future of our dear country, Nigeria, through noble professions. It will interest you to know that you cannot risk resting on your oars, as there is so much work to be done. The engagement of your students and other stakeholders shows concern for their well-being in and out of school, their social life, and emotional stability, which must all be synchronized for better performance and desired outcomes,” she added.
Permanent Secretary of TESCOM, Mrs. Iyabo Seriki-Bello, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the foundational role of teachers. “Teachers lay a foundation for success; they are mind builders who mould and shape the lives of students destined to be future leaders. Great teachers make memories and assist students to think and attain goals,” she noted.
Seriki-Bello urged the new teachers to be passionate about their profession. “We need teachers by choice and not by force. Teachers must possess the ability to adapt to changing situations and be technologically savvy. With technology, you can think locally and act globally. Remember also, you must be able to communicate effectively,” she advised.
Commissioners II and IV of TESCOM, Mr. Abiodun Bamigboye and Mrs. Abimbola Adeola Idowu, shared their experiences, noting the absence of such induction programmes when they began their teaching careers. They emphasized the importance of the training designed to guide the new teachers on their professional journey. “With this induction programme, you have been effectively insulated against anything that would make you fail. Study the induction training manual well to be rightly guided and follow the right path in the profession,” they advised.
This induction marks a new chapter for the 1000 new teachers, who are now equipped to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders in Lagos State.
