Kakalistiq.com reports that the Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakeem Shittu, has applauded and extended heartfelt congratulations to the Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom, HRM Oba Dr. Shefiu Adewale, Bamgbopa Eshilokun I, on the occasion of the 2024 Epe Kayokayo Festival.
In an interview, Dr. Shittu praised the tireless efforts of the Olu-Epe and the Epe Kayokayo Festival Committee, led by Otunba TJ Abass, for their commitment to preserving and promoting the rich history and cultural heritage of Epe with the considerable involvement of children.
“The inclusion of young children in Quranic recitations, quiz competitions, and vibrant carnivals is a testament to the festival’s role in fostering spiritual, religious and social development among the youth, which is essential for nation-building,” said Dr Shittu.
He emphasized the importance of involving the younger generation in such cultural events. “By participating in the Royal visit led by the Olu-Epe, children learn invaluable lessons in charity, kindness, and communal bonding. The exchange of gifts and the commemoration of past community heroes instil values of selflessness and the importance of leaving a positive legacy, which are crucial elements in the affective domain of learning,” Dr. Shittu added.
He emphasized that the events not only preserve historical narratives but also play a vital role in imparting values and knowledge that contribute to the holistic development of future leaders. “By marrying culture with education, festivals like Kayokayo ensure that the rich heritage of Epe continues to inspire and guide the younger generation towards a brighter future,” he asserted.
As the Epe Kayokayo Festival celebrates the 1851 voyage of King Kosoko to what is now Epe, it underscores the vital connection between cultural festivals and the education of children and young people.
