The election, which saw 54 senators representing 17 Southern states come together, marks a significant leadership takeover within the legislative body.
Senator Abiru, renowned for his expertise in banking, finance, and economics, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Having served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, he has a proven track record of leadership and strategic decision-making. Before his distinguished career in the Senate, Senator Abiru held esteemed positions in the banking sector, culminating in his role as the Managing Director of Polaris Bank.
The election of Senator Abiru as Chairman also saw the appointment of six other executives to support and steer the affairs of the Southern Senators Forum. Among them are Senator Victor Umeh from Anambra Central as Vice Chairman, Senator Mpigi Barinada from Rivers South East as Secretary, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong from Cross River North as Publicity Secretary, and Senator Kenneth Eze from Ebonyi Central as Treasurer.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Abiru expressed his commitment to using the forum as a platform for robust discussions, analysis, and actions aimed at advancing the interests of Nigeria and its citizens. “This forum, the Southern Senators Forum, is to champion the course of Nigeria and Nigerians. We have our Northern brothers with the Northern Senators Forum. We will work together with the Northern Senators forum to move the country forward. “We will swing into action and roll out our plans for the betterment of the region and Nigeria. We will map out our plans and work on them for the betterment of Nigeria and Nigerians generally. “Before today, we have been running the forum in this 10th Senate as if we don’t exist, but now that the last leadership has transferred power to us, the forum will be made vibrant,” he said.
