Kakalistiq.com reports that the historic Epe Kayokayo 2024 festival commenced with a flourish on June 18, as the palace of the Olu-Epe of Epe kingdom, Oba Dr. Shefiu Adewale Bamgbopa Eshilokun I, welcomed members of the press for a grand opening press conference.

HRM Oba Dr. Shefiu Adewale, the Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom.

In his address, Olu-Epe praised the Almighty for the previous year’s peaceful and successful festivities, emphasizing the deep historical roots of the festival. “This tradition, handed down from our forebears, is a treasure we cherish. Plans are underway to uncover more historical perspectives behind this festival, even if it means venturing beyond Lagos,” he revealed.

“We will select representatives, including myself, to trace the origins of this festival. Under the stewardship of Otunba TJ, the finances are in place to embark on this journey,” he added with conviction.

Answering questions from the press, Olu-Epe assured all guests of a grand feast despite the country’s socioeconomic challenges. “The major hurdle has always been financing, but I am pleased to announce that the funds are secured to celebrate in grand style,” he affirmed.

High Chief Kadri Odedeogboro, the Balogun of Epe Kingdom, and High Chief Shobaloju, the Sarumi of Epe Kingdom, called for more transformative programs, while also acknowledging the commendable efforts of TJ Abass. “The transformative initiatives brought forward by TJ Abass have been nothing short of remarkable,” noted Chief Odedeogboro.

Hon. Yusuff (Presi) echoed the Olu-Epe’s sentiments, highlighting the festival’s innovations and changes. “This year, we are introducing a female novelty match and proposing the King Kosoko Embankment/Conference Center and Kayokayo Village, projected to be completed in five years. The Lagos State Government has been a pillar of support, providing funding, security, traffic management, and street illumination through various agencies,” he said.

Alhaja Olushola Alade Raji, the Chairman of the Kayokayo Publicity Committee, expressed her excitement at the festival’s launch. “The cultural, religious, and socioeconomic impacts of this festival have been significantly transformed by Otunba TJ Abass. This event is not just a celebration but a deep entrenchment of our historical heritage,” she stated.

She urged the community’s sons and daughters to return home for the festival rather than solely for official documents. She detailed the week-long event lineup: Tahjuud on Friday night, Quranic and Quiz competition on Saturday, General Medical Check-Up on Sunday, Novelty Match on Monday, Youth Rally on Tuesday, Children’s Party on Wednesday, Royal Visit on Thursday, Special Jumaat Service on Friday, and the Grand Finale on Saturday.

Earlier, Comrade Giwa Murtala Moore, SSA to Governor Babajide Sanwoolu on Vocational and Technical Education and President of the Epe Youth Forum, shared his vision for the Youth Rally. “We aim to sensitize youths on drug abuse, vocational and technical skills development, and to rally support for the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria against protests of rage. We have informed top security agencies to ensure the safety and security of all participants,” he assured.

With a rich blend of historical reverence and modern innovation, the Epe Kayokayo 2024 festival promises a week of vibrant celebration, cultural revival, and community solidarity. As the festival unfolds, the town of Epe eagerly anticipates a grand showcase of its heritage and unity.
