kakalistiq.com reports that the Lagos State Government has announced the appointment of His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara, as the 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University.

The announcement was formally conveyed in a statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu, and dated Sunday, February 15, 2026. The information was released through the official communication of Lagos State University.

According to the statement, the appointment was approved by the Governor of Lagos State and Visitor to the University, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, following the successful completion of the tenure of Professor Gbolahan Elias, SAN, who served as the institution’s 5th Chancellor. The university community commended Professor Elias for his meritorious service and for upholding the dignity of the office throughout his tenure.

The appointment, the official statement says, was made in line with the provisions of the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended), which empowers the Visitor to appoint the Chancellor of the University. Oba Ogunsanwo’s tenure will run for a single term of five years, effective from Friday, February 13, 2026, and is renewable once.
The Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University have congratulated the newly appointed Chancellor, expressing confidence in his ability to provide impactful leadership and further advance the vision and mission of Lagos State University.
