kakalistiq.com reports that the Epe Girls Explorer Space, themed “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” marked the 2024 International Day of the Girl-Child with an inspiring celebration aimed at empowering young girls in the community.
Organized by the Lagos Youth Parliament, Epe Constituency I, led by Hon. Olumuyiwa Odunare, in partnership with the Epe Local Government under Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun on Saturday 12th October, 2024, the event brought together students, educators, and community leaders.
Speaking at the event, the Epe Local Government Chairman emphasized the importance of self-discovery and pursuing one’s passion. “I heard the speaker talk about finding yourself, your style, and shining like a light. Not everyone can be a doctor or lawyer, but we all have something we are good at. It is important to identify who you are and what brings you joy. Our mothers and teachers should encourage our girls to find their strengths and join clubs that can help them grow,” she said.
Hon. Mahruf, convener of the Epe Girls Explorer Space, highlighted the importance of the event in empowering young girls. “Yesterday, the world celebrated the girl-child, and today, we gather here to inspire and educate the brilliant young women of our community,” he said. “This event is all about unlocking their potential. I extend a warm welcome and deep gratitude to the representatives from the education department and our host, Hon. (Princess) Surah Animashaun, as well as the dedicated team behind this project.”
Project leader Amb. Giwa Omotomiwa expressed her pride in the resilience and potential of young girls. “We wanted a day where we could celebrate the girl-child, recognizing their efforts and strength. I believe in their capacity, tenacity, and resilience. There’s a fire burning in them, and one day, they will change the world,” she stated.
During the event, Abass Mulikat Oluwafumilayo, a leadubg advocate, spoke passionately about the need to address teenage pregnancy in the community. “The Epe Girls Explorer Space was convened by Hon. Odunare, with Amb. Giwa as the team lead. I am proud to see Epe moving forward, but we must tackle the issue of teenage pregnancy,” she remarked.
The event also featured insightful contributions from students. Johnson Mayowa, an SS1 student from Odomola Senior Secondary School, shared what she learned: “I realized that females are unique, created by God to be helpmates to men. We have a future to build, and my advice to others is to focus on their education. If formal education is not an option, they should at least learn a vocation.”
Princess, a student from Chalcedony High Secondary School, urged girls to have confidence and self-pride. “We should always have courage and be proud to be girls. To every girl out there, no matter how oppressed you feel, never look down on yourself,” she said.
Similarly, Esther from El-Bosa College encouraged her peers to dream big. “Believe in yourself, dream big, and go for it. All girls should live with confidence and courage,” she concluded.
The Epe Girls Explorer Space which featured presentation of awards to discussants, served as a vibrant reminder of the potential within every girl and the importance of nurturing and supporting their ambitions.
