In a move to strengthen pension administration and ensure smoother retirement transitions within Lagos State’s basic education sector, kakalistiq.com reports that the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) concluded a three-day intensive retreat for Pension Desk Officers across the 20 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs). The retreat, held in Badagry from Friday, May 9 to Sunday, May 11, 2025, brought together key personnel tasked with managing the retirement process for teachers and education staff.

Speaking at the opening of the retreat, LASUBEB Executive Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, reaffirmed the State Government’s priority on the welfare of retirees. “The Lagos State Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the welfare of retired personnel in the basic education sector,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of accurate, timely, and compassionate pension administration.
The LASUBEB Chairman, represented at the event by Board Member Mr. Owolabi Jamiu Falana, noted that the retreat was not just a routine training but part of a broader strategy to modernize pension processes across the state. “LASUBEB will continue to lead initiatives aimed at improving operational standards and promoting a seamless transition for retirees, reinforcing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to a responsive and people-centered governance,” he assured.

Throughout the retreat, participants engaged in hands-on sessions led by seasoned facilitators in pension management. Mrs. Bisi Ojora delivered an in-depth training on documentation procedures, pension calculations, and gratuity processing. She underscored the need for transparency and meticulous record-keeping, urging participants to always act in the best interests of retirees.
Mr. Olufemi Damilola guided attendees through the financial side of pension administration, offering practical insights on the computation of funds and aligning practices with statutory guidelines. His session focused on ensuring that every retiree receives their entitlements accurately and without delay.
Participants praised the retreat for its relevance and depth, describing it as an eye-opener that clarified many aspects of pension management. The forum also fostered cross-learning, giving officers the chance to exchange experiences and adopt standardized best practices across LGEAs.
More than just a workshop, the retreat marks another step in the Lagos State Government’s broader reform agenda aimed at improving public service delivery. With better-trained officers now in place, the state is better positioned to offer retirees not just respect, but the timely and efficient support they deserve.
