The Epe community was struck early this morning by tragedy on what locals now remember as a “Black Monday,” after a cement truck collided with a shop at Ayetoro Market, leading to devastating loss of lives and property. The accident coincided with the bi-weekly “Epe Ero” market day, leaving families and the entire community in excruciating anguish.

Reacting to the tragedy, Barrister Omodele Ibrahim, President of the Epe Ogunmodede Club, expressed deep condolences on behalf of the club, urging the community to stand together in the face of this profound loss. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those affected by this horrific accident. We share in your sorrow and pain,” he said, describing the incident as both “tragic and preventable.”

Barrister Omodele Ibrahim not only expressed sympathy for the victims but also suggested preventive measures to avert future truck accidents in Epe. These include installing speed breakers and iron guard rails, as well as prohibiting and strictly enforcing restrictions against roadside trading along the road.

Highlighting the need for stricter regulations, Barrister Ibrahim voiced concerns over the presence of heavy-duty trucks in densely populated areas such as Ayetoro Market. “It’s time we reconsider the routes these vehicles take through our community,” he urged. “Only roadworthy trucks should be permitted on roads as congested as this, especially near such important economic hubs.”

Speaking on behalf of the Epe Ogunmodede Club, he pledged the club’s support for any initiative that would enhance road safety, particularly along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway through Paramount Hill. “This unfortunate incident is a wake-up call. We must act swiftly to prevent such calamities from repeating.”

Barr. Ibrahim prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls lost in the tragedy, encouraging all road users to adopt safer driving practices to protect their own lives and the lives of others.
