During an interview on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, kakalistiq.com reports that Hon. Bayo Balogun, the representative of the Ibeju-Lekki Federal constituency at the House of Representatives, delivered a powerful message to the youth constituency in Epe Division, urging them to remain focused on their goals and steer clear of drugs.
Speaking at the Mentors Platform event organized by Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sesan Olowa, at the prestigious Jata Hotels in Awoyaya, Hon. Balogun emphasized the importance of the program in guiding young minds towards productive paths.
“This program couldn’t have come at a better time,” remarked Hon. Balogun. “Ibeju-Lekki is currently undergoing a transformation, transitioning from an agrarian to an industrialized local government. It’s crucial for our youth to make the right career decisions to align with this development.”
Acknowledging the significant turnout of youth from various institutions of higher learning in Lagos, Hon. Balogun commended Chairman Olowa’s initiative, stating that the program was a step in the right direction.
“We must prepare our students and graduates for the opportunities emerging in our evolving local government,” Hon. Balogun emphasized. “The real estate development and industrialization occurring in our axis require us to equip our youth with the right skills and mindset. Programs like this will guide them in making informed career decisions.”
Highlighting the importance of proper orientation and career guidance, Hon. Balogun stressed the need for collaboration between local and state governments to ensure that youth in the Ibeju-Lekki axis benefit from ongoing developments.
During the panel session titled “Navigating Career Choices: Empowering Individuals to Pursue Purposeful Paths,” Hon. Bayo Balogun, drawing from his journey, shared valuable insights with the audience. Reflecting on his early years in politics, he recounted how he began as the Secretary to the Local Government in 1999, emphasizing that his appointment was based on capacity, competence, and merit.
He candidly revealed his struggles, including the setback of not passing his papers in one sitting, which led him to return to Ibeju-Lekki. In his hometown, he observed a prevalent culture where youth prioritized fishing, farming, and early marriage over education. However, his university experience transformed his outlook, prompting him to establish the National Association of Ibeju-Lekki to challenge this norm and advocate for change.
Hon. Balogun shared the challenges he faced in navigating conservative politics and the resistance he encountered while striving to alter the status quo. Despite the turbulence, he emphasized the importance of educational empowerment, and service as the cornerstones of effective governance, urging youths to remain resilient and pursue purposeful paths. He underscored the critical role of student unionism in the democratic process, encouraging active participation and advocacy for positive change within communities.
As the local government transforms, Hon. Balogun’s message serves as a rallying call for youth empowerment and development, emphasizing the pivotal role of education and mentorship in shaping the future of Ibeju-Lekki.
