Addressing the conference, which was themed “Scaling Up the Status of Early Childhood Education in Nigeria: The Stakeholders’ Role,” Dr. Shittu described the theme as timely and crucial, reflecting the urgent need for collective action in the sector.

“Early childhood development is the foundation of a child’s future. We must ensure that every child in Lagos and beyond has access to quality education from the very beginning,” Dr. Shittu stated, highlighting the conference’s importance.

He lauded the collaborative spirit of ECAN and other stakeholders, noting that their united efforts are essential for driving positive change in early childhood education. “The strides made by ECAN over the past three decades have been remarkable,” he said. “Their contributions have significantly improved the quality and accessibility of early childhood education across Nigeria.”

In response to ongoing concerns about teacher training, Dr. Shittu acknowledged the Lagos State Government’s commitment to upscaling teacher expertise through seminars, workshops, and training sessions. He revealed that a recent memo from Abuja had invited directors and desk officers to participate in these endeavours.

“Regarding infrastructure, I am confident that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in Lagos State is making significant strides. The Federal Government has even recognized this progress,” Dr. Shittu remarked. “However, we must all take responsibility for maintaining and sustaining these facilities to ensure the education of our children.”

Dr. Shittu also expressed his gratitude towards traditional leaders for their efforts in protecting educational assets within their communities, acknowledging their vital role in safeguarding the future of the state’s educational system.

In an interview following the conference, Dr. Shittu underscored the critical importance of a child’s early development, noting that the Lagos State Government has enacted laws to guarantee that every child in the state is protected and has access to education, with a strong focus on inclusivity.

He urged parents and teachers to continue their dedicated efforts, emphasizing that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has implemented key innovations and programs aimed at nurturing resilient, morally upright, and innovative individuals. “We must leave no child behind,” Dr. Shittu concluded, reinforcing the government’s commitment to building a brighter future for the children of Lagos.
