In a bold move to strengthen accountability and curb corrupt practices, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to establish an Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).

The initiative, launched on Tuesday at LASUBEB’s headquarters in Maryland, Lagos, brought together top officials, department heads, and staff members for an engaging sensitization workshop on ethical conduct and anti-graft measures.

Representatives from ICPC led the interactive session, which covered key topics such as identifying corruption red flags, whistleblower protection, and the importance of integrity in public service.

Dr. Hakeem Shittu, Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, underscored the critical need for transparency in delivering quality education to Lagos children.

“Corruption is a major setback to development – it denies our children the standard of education they rightfully deserve,” said Dr. Shittu, who was represented by Board Member Dr. Bayo Adefuye. “The ACTU is not just a formality; it’s a decisive step to ensure public funds are used properly and for their intended purpose.”

He reaffirmed LASUBEB’s commitment to ethical governance in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda, urging staff to uphold due process and accountability in all operations.

Mr. Alex Chukwurah, Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for ICPC in Lagos, highlighted ACTU’s role as an internal watchdog. The unit will promote good governance, enforce compliance, detect misconduct, and serve as a bridge between LASUBEB and the anti-graft agency.

The event marked a significant stride in Lagos’ efforts to foster a culture of integrity, ensuring that resources for basic education are protected from mismanagement. With this collaboration, LASUBEB aims to set a new standard for transparency in Nigeria’s public sector.
