Oba of Lagos Presses for Credible Census as NPC Chair Pledges Digital Readiness.

kakalistiq.com reports that the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu I, has urged the Federal Government to fully back the National Population Commission (NPC) to guarantee a credible Population and Housing Census, warning that Nigeria can no longer afford to rely on obsolete figures. The monarch made the call on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, while receiving the NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, and his delegation at the Iga Idunganran Palace, Lagos.

The NPC delegation included the Federal Commissioner representing Lagos and Ogun States, Barr. Olayinka Oladunjoye and Dr. Otunba Fasuwa Johnson Abayomi; Director-General of the NPC, Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun and other senior technical aides of the Chairman, alongside the GMD of Barnksforte Technologies Limited, Mr. Adedayo Bankole.

Stressing the importance of accurate data for national growth, Oba Akiolu lamented the long gap since the last census in 2006, noting its damaging impact on planning and development. “Accurate data is essential for evidence-based policies. Nigeria cannot continue to plan with outdated figures,” the monarch stated, while pledging the palace’s support in mobilising Lagos residents for full participation in census and civil registration activities.

In his address, Dr. Yusuf described Lagos as a state whose population realities have changed dramatically over the years, making fresh data inevitable for meaningful governance. “Planning for housing, transportation, schools, hospitals, and other essential services is still based on outdated figures that don’t reflect the true size and structure of Lagos’ population,” he said, reaffirming the Commission’s readiness to conduct a fully digital census once a new date is approved by the Federal Government.

The NPC Chairman also highlighted the importance of continuous birth and death registration under the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system, calling for stronger community involvement through traditional institutions. “Accurate birth and death registration ensures proper documentation for access to education, healthcare, and social protection,” he stated, adding, “With your guidance, our public engagement efforts will be stronger and more inclusive.”

Barr. Olayinka Oladunjoye

The Federal Commissioner representing Lagos State at the NPC, Barr. Saidat Olayinka Oladunjoye, commended the Oba for his consistent support, especially in promoting electronic CRVS across the state.

The courtesy call underscores the strategic importance of Lagos in the success of the forthcoming census.
