kakalistiq.com reports that Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, inaugurated a cutting-edge STEM lab at Government College, Lagos, marking a major milestone in the school’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
The new lab, powered by the SAIL Empowerment Foundation—an initiative of Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru and his wife, Mrs. Feyisola Abiru—aims to transform science and technology education for students.
In addition to the STEM lab, Governor Sanwo-Olu, through his representative, also unveiled several key projects funded by Senator Abiru. These include the complete renovation of the school’s 700-seater auditorium and the reconstruction of lecture halls, administrative offices, and new staff rooms.
Senator Abiru, a proud alumnus who graduated over 40 years ago, emphasized the long-term vision for the school and beyond. “This is just the beginning,” Abiru declared. “Our goal is not confined to Ikorodu or Lagos East. We aim to extend these opportunities to all of Lagos and, eventually, to every corner of Nigeria, ensuring that every child has access to a world-class education that empowers them to dream, innovate, and succeed.”
Abiru shared personal reflections on his family’s journey, starting with his father, the late Senator Hon. Justice Mubasheer Akanbi Olatunji Abiru, whose deep connection to Ikorodu influenced the senator’s commitment to service. “Watching my father’s dedication to education and public service deeply influenced my own path as a Lagosian committed to public service and the development of our great city,” he said.
As chairman of the 50th Founder’s Day Lecture, Abiru also addressed the growing gap between private and public education in Nigeria. “The separation between public and private schools has widened, with children of elites attending private institutions far removed from the experiences of the average Nigerian child,” he noted. However, through the SAIL Empowerment Foundation, Abiru is committed to changing that reality by bringing innovative educational opportunities to public schools.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Hon. Jimoh Alli-Balogun, Lagos State Commissioner of Basic Education, praised Senator Abiru for his lasting contributions to education and human capital development. The event also saw tributes from the Global President of Government College Lagos Old Boys Association, Rear Admiral Leye Jaiyeola (Rtd), and other distinguished alumni.
The keynote lecture was delivered by renowned intellectual property expert, Professor Bankole Shodipo, SAN, rounding off a memorable celebration of the school’s legacy and future.
