Pep Guardiola, the head coach of Manchester City, has warned his team that their opponents, Manchester United, are capable of destroying their triple aspirations on Saturday.
This weekend, City will go to Wembley to finish the second phase of their remarkable quest to win the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in the same season. With three games remaining, Guardiola’s squad won the Premier League for the sixth time in six seasons, giving the City manager time to rest key players and adjust his strategy for the final two games of the season.
This weekend, City will compete against United in the first all-Manchester FA Cup final. On June 10, City will then travel to Istanbul to compete against Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
Guardiola has only been focusing on United this week since they are preventing City from replicating their neighbors’ historic treble victory from 1999.
The only other English club to have captured all three major trophies in a single campaign is United. In the Champions League final, Inter, who are now third in the comparatively weak Serie A, will be the underdogs against City.
Guardiola is well aware that United will be a tougher test, and he also understands that Ten Hag’s club has enough talent to trouble United even when they are not performing at their peak. Guardiola, who just witnessed United defeat Chelsea 4-1, is still troubled by City’s 2-1 defeat to United at Old Trafford in January.
“At the moment, United is more of my attention. I watched their matchup with Chelsea. I was incredibly impressed, and I’ve begun to take a closer look at what they did to us during the game at Old Trafford, Guardiola remarked.
“We must exercise caution, just as in the past. I would exercise caution regardless, but after Thursday and their recent games, we will do everything in our power to get ready.
Guardiola may be cautious, but City has established itself as the first English football dynasty since the Ferguson period at Manchester United, and they have every reason to think that they will win the FA Cup for the second time under Guardiola. City won 12 straight league games to win their third consecutive championship after crushing United 6-3 in October. When they fielded a depleted team against Brentford last weekend, they suffered their first defeat in 26 games across all competitions.
When City’s outstanding debut campaign in England comes to a close, Erling Haaland will be their main player. The Norwegian striker has 52 goals overall, including a Premier League single-season record of 36 goals. In their rematch after Haaland’s hat trick against United in October, Ten Hag was successful in holding him without a goal.
With a victory over Newcastle in the League Cup final in February, Ten Hag broke United’s six-year trophy drought.
His rookie season has been impressive. Beating City at Wembley would be a big accomplishment for him since he would become just the second manager in United’s history to win a major trophy in his first season.
Even without Anthony Martial, who is ill, third-placed United in the Premier League is eager to derail City’s treble chances.
We are aware that this is a special game and a significant final. Fighting to be in that position to win titles has been our goal for the entire year.
