kakalistiq.com reports that the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, HRM Oba Dr. Olukayode Olufolarin Ogunsanwo (Telade IV), today, hosted Rear Admiral MG Oamen, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, at his palace in Ilara Kingdom, Epe, Lagos State. The high-profile visit centered on the ongoing construction of a naval base in Ijih, Ilara, a project expected to significantly enhance the region’s security architecture.
Describing the visit as a pivotal development, Oba Ogunsanwo in the company of his queen, Olori Bolanle Ogunsanwo, Baales and Chiefs, emphasized the transformative impact the naval base would bring to Ilara Kingdom and the wider Epe division. “The establishment of this base is a critical step towards safeguarding lives and property in our communities. It will provide a robust response to criminal activities such as kidnapping, especially in the riverine areas. The presence of the Navy here will deter such threats and foster a sense of security among our people,” the monarch stated.
The Alara revealed that his kingdom donated 30 acres of land for the establishment of the naval base after a formal request from the Navy. He recalled past security challenges in the area, including the notorious abduction of students from Lagos State Model College Igbonla, and stressed that such incidents underscored the necessity of a strong military presence.
“This base will complement the Nigerian Army Cantonment in Iraye, creating a balanced military presence in Epe with the Army, Navy, and Air Force working together. Beyond security, it will stimulate economic growth and infrastructural development in the area. This is a win-win for everyone,” Oba Ogunsanwo remarked.
Rear Admiral Oamen highlighted the significance of his visit, stating that it served three purposes: to deliver the appreciation of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral E.I Okpala, for the Alara’s support, to introduce himself formally as the new FOC, and to strengthen ties with the Ilara Kingdom and Epe division.
On his entourage were Commodore AO Ojebode, Command Operations Officer, Western Naval Command; Brigadier General JN Atahiru, Deputy Commandant, Nigerian Army Ordinance School; Captain (NN) SO Ohunenese, Commander, Naval Base Epe and Lt. D.O Olubamido, Boat Officer, Naval Base, Epe.
“Your hospitality and generous donation of land for the naval base establishment have been instrumental in ensuring the success of this project,” Oamen said, addressing the monarch. “This collaboration demonstrates the critical role traditional institutions play in fostering national security.”
He assured the people of Ilara and Epe of the Navy’s commitment to enhancing the region’s security. “The Navy is here to add value. We are not just a military presence; we are partners in progress. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us whenever the need arises,” he added.
In a media briefing, Rear Admiral Oamen underscored the importance of engaging with traditional rulers to enhance military operations. “Contemporary security challenges require intelligence and collaboration. Traditional institutions are the custodians of local knowledge and culture, making them invaluable partners in our efforts to combat criminality.”
He continued, “With all security agencies represented in Epe, this is bad news for criminals. On land, we’re after you; from the air, we’ll see you; and then you can’t run away through the creeks, the Navy is waiting for you. So, I think they’ll look for other businesses,” he asserted.
The event featured the presentation of an award plaque to Oba Ogunsanwo in recognition of his unwavering support for national security initiatives. Warm pleasantries and strategic discussions marked the visit, with both parties affirming their commitment to the safety, security, and progress of Ilara and Epe communities.
The Alara concluded with a prayer for continued collaboration between the Navy and traditional institutions, emphasizing that such partnerships are vital for sustainable development and communal advancement.
