Kakalistiq.com reports that Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, expressed gratitude during a thank-you visit to the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, for the rapid progress on the rehabilitation of the 34-Km Ikorodu-Itokin Road.
Originally constructed in 1975 by Messrs. Taylor Woodrow under the regime of General Yakubu Gowon and General Mobolaji Johnson, the road has long awaited significant repairs to meet modern transportation standards.
In April 2021, Senator Abiru spearheaded a motion in the Nigerian Senate titled “The Urgent Need For The Rehabilitation Of The Ikorodu-Sagamu And Ikorodu-Itoikin-Epe Roads To Further Bridge The Infrastructure Gap And Enhance Economic Growth In Nigeria.” Emphasizing the critical role of these roads in Nigeria’s economic growth, Senator Abiru underscored their importance as access points from other parts of the country and routes to key economic hubs such as the New Lekki-Ibeju corridor.
During the visit, both Governor Sanwo-Olu and Senator Abiru advocated for the dualization of the road, which is currently a single-carrier highway. The Minister assured them that the design for the dualization would commence soon, alongside the ongoing reconstruction efforts.
The ongoing rehabilitation and stabilization work has already yielded positive results, significantly improving travel times along the corridor. Motorists and residents now report that it takes less than 30 minutes to travel from Itamaga to Itokin Bridge, compared to the previous journey duration of up to 2 hours before the rehabilitation.
Governor Sanwo-Olu and Senator Abiru extended their appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support and commitment to the completion of the road rehabilitation, as well as other critical infrastructure projects nationwide. Their visit serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure and fostering economic growth in Lagos State and beyond.
