The accident, involving a cement truck that tragically rammed into a bustling market in Epe on Monday, November 11, 2024, has left the community in grief and intensified discussions on road safety measures.

Speaking on Arise TV’s live broadcast on “National Dialogue on Home-Grown Parliamentary System of Government,” Raji mourned the loss of his constituents and expressed profound sorrow for the lives lost in the tragedy. Reflecting on the incident, Raji noted that such accidents are preventable if proper attention is given to vehicle regulations and the enforcement of safety standards for trailer operators.

“The incident, like many others involving trailer drivers, is avoidable if we pay attention to vehicle regulation and state of operations,” Raji stated. “We must review the standards of trailer operations on our roads to ensure the safety of lives, prevent recklessness, and mandate periodic checks to verify the roadworthiness of trucks.”

Raji appealed to local sellers to avoid setting up stalls by the roadside, highlighting that designated market spaces are being constructed to accommodate them safely. “I appeal to our people to avoid selling by the roadside, especially as efforts are underway to provide spaces in the designated market, which is still under construction,” he emphasized.

He extended his condolences to the affected families and the entire community. He urged collective support for measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The incident has sparked widespread calls for preventive measures, with many residents and local leaders urging the government to prioritize public safety on roads frequented by heavy-duty trucks.
