In a heartfelt tribute to the contributions of traditional institutions in Lagos, kakalistiq.com reports that the former Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) has extolled HRM Alayeluwa Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun’s remarkable leadership and developmental strides. At a grand occasion celebrating the monarch’s 80th birthday and his 25th reign over Epe land on Tuesday 18th February 2025 at Jubilee Chalets in Epe, Fashola highlighted the indispensable role of traditional rulers in governance, peacekeeping, and infrastructural development in Lagos State.

Reflecting on his political journey, Fashola credited the early support he received from Oba Animashaun and other esteemed traditional rulers. He acknowledged the monarch’s unwavering commitment to Epe’s progress and lauded his philanthropic spirit, which truly embodies his name, Animashaun – “the benevolent one.”

The former governor emphasized that traditional rulers play a critical role in stabilizing communities and fostering growth. He noted that during his tenure as Chief of Staff, Epe experienced persistent conflicts. However, through the collaboration of the Oloja, Obas, Baales, and the local government, peace was restored, paving the way for significant developmental projects.

Fashola stressed that leadership is a burden that must be shouldered with responsibility. He pointed out that while many recognize government officials for policy implementation, the unseen influence of traditional institutions is often the real force behind Lagos’ steady progress. The roles these rulers play, ranging from infrastructure advocacy to cultural preservation, have been instrumental in shaping the state’s developmental landscape.

Several traditional rulers were recognized by the former Minister for their significant roles in the advancement of Lagos State. Fashola cited key projects that were made possible through their support, including:

The AGRIC-YES initiative, the Drivers’ Institute, the Agric Mini Water Works, and Solar Power Energy in Epe.

The remarkable contributions of HRM Oba Babatunde Ogunlaja in executing road, school, and healthcare projects, which have immensely improved rural development in Epe.

The pivotal role of the late Alara of Ilara in securing investments for the Lekki Free Trade Zone and ensuring peace and stability through traditional methods.

The instrumental efforts of Oba Saheed Elegushi in tourism, Oba Gbolahan Lawal (Oniru) in urban planning, and the Ojora of Ijora in industrial development.

The massive road infrastructure expansion in Ikorodu facilitated by Ayangburen and other local rulers.

The strategic support of Oba Ranodu of Imota in the establishment of the Imota Rice Mill, a significant milestone in Lagos’ agricultural sector.

While lauding the progress made, Fashola raised concerns over the erosion of the authority of traditional institutions due to modern governance. He warned against diminishing the sacred essence of royal leadership by allowing unworthy individuals to receive chieftaincy titles. He called for a more rigorous vetting process in conferring traditional honours and advocated for the withdrawal of titles from those who bring dishonour to the institution.

“The time has come for us to review these practices,” Fashola declared. “It is important to send a message of accountability and consequences to future generations. Traditional rulers must uphold the sanctity of their titles and ensure that those who bear them are truly worthy.”

Fashola concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to amplifying the crucial role of traditional institutions in governance. He emphasized that their wisdom, influence, and grassroots connection make them invaluable partners in the state’s continuous progress.

As Lagos forges ahead in development, the legacy of leaders like HRM Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun stands as a beacon of hope for future generations. The event not only celebrated the monarch’s achievements but also reinforced the indispensable role of traditional institutions in shaping a prosperous and harmonious society.
