A wave of celebration and pride swept through professional and alumni circles yesterday following the appointment of AIG Olatunji Disu as Nigeria’s Acting Inspector-General of Police by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

In a glowing congratulatory message, Engr. Dr. Aiyeola Sikiru, Director of Space Regulation and Spectrum Management Department at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja, described the appointment as a “historic honour and a crowning reward for decades of disciplined service to the nation.”

Engineer Aiyeola, who shares a long-standing bond with the Disu family dating back to their school days at the prestigious Odo-Obara High School, Epe, recalled that he served as Senior Boy during the 1985/86 session while the new IGP’s wife, Olufunlola Disu (née Raheem), was Assistant Senior Girl of the same set. According to him, this unique connection makes the moment even more personal and emotionally fulfilling.

“This appointment is not just a professional milestone; it is a pride to the Disu family and to all of us who have watched Tunji Disu grow with integrity, courage and purpose,” Engineer Aiyeola noted. He attributed the elevation to years of steadfast commitment, selfless service and an unbroken record of excellence within the Nigeria Police Force, adding that it stands as a beacon of hope for young officers who believe in hard work and honour.

Tracing the new IGP’s career journey, Aiyeola described it as a compelling narrative of discipline and impact. He recalled that AIG Olatunji Disu served as Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos (2015-2021); Deputy Commissioner of Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Head, Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT); Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command; Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command; Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos; and Head, Special Protection Unit (SPU), Force Headquarters, Abuja. This, he said, helped him to cement a reputation for professionalism, humane leadership and operational excellence.

Engineer Aiyeola expressed confidence that the new Acting IGP’s wealth of experience and innovative mindset would translate into a transformative era for the Police Force, strengthening security architecture and restoring public trust while safeguarding lives and property across the nation.

“With this appointment,” Aiyeola said, “destiny has met duty, and Nigeria stands to gain from a leader forged by service, sharpened by experience and guided by honour.”

He offered heartfelt prayers, asking God to grant IGP Disu guidance, wisdom and direction as he steers the affairs of the Force at this critical moment in Nigeria’s history.
