Kakalistiq.com reports that the Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Shittu Hakeem, has emphasized the critical contributions of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) to nation-building during the third edition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event, themed “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” took place on Tuesday, December 19th, 2023, at the Board Multi-Purpose Hall in Maryland, Ikeja.
Addressing the audience, Dr. Shittu acknowledged the strength and unique contributions of PLWDs, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility and collaboration in pursuing inclusivity and equality for everyone in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He highlighted that the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually, aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by PLWDs and advocate for their rights, inclusion, and well-being.
“As a board committed to ensuring the successful delivery of quality basic education, we recognize the journey towards sustainable development, leaving no child behind irrespective of their background, tribe, or gender. Our policies, programs, and initiatives will continue to be designed with the active involvement and empowerment of persons with disabilities to address their diverse needs,” Dr. Shittu stated.
Mrs. Ajetumobi, founder of the You Matter to Us Foundation, encouraged children with disabilities to embrace their uniqueness and potential. She advised them to express their abilities, embrace technology and 21st-century core skills, increase their awareness, promote inclusive education, and believe in their capabilities despite any disabilities.
The event underscored the importance of recognizing and celebrating the valuable contributions of PLWDs in Nigeria.
