In a bid to engage youth and curb social vices during the festive season, kakalistiq.com reports that the Eredo LCDA, under the leadership of Hon. Ismail Akinloye, launched the maiden edition of the Eredo LCDA Chairman’s Cup. The kickoff match, held on December 18, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Grammar School, saw an electrifying start as Odogbawojo FC edged out Igbonla FC in a penalty shootout.
The event, which attracted a large turnout of spectators, was attended by notable dignitaries, including former Lagos State House of Assembly member for Epe Constituency II, Hon. Shakiru Adebanjo; Eredo LCDA Vice Chairman, Hon. Adesanya Lateef; and Leader of the Eredo LCDA House, Hon. Babatunde Bakre.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman, Hon. Adesanya Lateef emphasized the tournament’s goal of redirecting youth energy toward positive pursuits. “This competition is about engaging our youth meaningfully during the yuletide. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their talents while staying away from social vices,” he stated.
Hon. Shakiru Adebanjo echoed similar sentiments, describing the initiative as a proactive step to curb youth restiveness. “It’s better to mobilize young people for sports than allow them to roam aimlessly and get involved in crime. I am impressed with their commitment and urge them to remain law-abiding,” he said.

The Head of Agriculture for Eredo LCDA, Mr. Owodina Babatunde, highlighted the additional benefits of the tournament. “Apart from keeping the youth off the streets, this platform could bring out the best in local talents and connect them to scouts. The enthusiasm we’ve seen today is proof of its success,” he remarked.
The competition features enticing rewards, including a ₦1 million cash prize for the winner, ₦500,000 for the runner-up, and ₦300,000 for third place, alongside trophies, medals and individual awards for best player, best coach, fair play team of the tournament among others.
The opening match showcased a thrilling contest between Odogbawojo FC and Igbonla FC. After a 1–1 draw during regular time, courtesy of goals by Jeda Ogunbiyi and Sulaiman Segun, the game was decided in a dramatic penalty shootout. Odogbawojo FC emerged victorious, sending their fans into a frenzy and setting the tone for the rest of the tournament.
With the success of the opening day, the Eredo LCDA Chairman’s Cup promises an exciting yuletide season for both players and fans, as the community rallies behind its youth in a spirit of unity and sportsmanship.
